JELS is a group of philanthropic individuals and organizations who have pooled their funds to provide interest free loans to Jewish students who have borrowed through conventional means and still have unmet needs. The program is administered through JVS and Hebrew Free Loan.
The JELS program assists full-time students who are permanent residents of Michigan. These student loans are renewable on an annual basis. Loan payments are deferred as long as the student is attending school full-time with the exception of a yearly payment of $50.
An appointment will be arranged at JVS, where you will discuss your plans and obtain assistance in learning about financial aid from school and government sources. If you meet the qualifications, a personalized confidential profile will be presented to the JELS Review Committee for loan approval.
Once the loan has been awarded, Hebrew Free Loan will process the loan application and promissory note. The student and one co-signer (a parent is allowed) are required to sign the promissory note.
For more information regarding the JELS program, contact Dr. Marvin Berman, the JELS coordinator, at [email protected] or (248) 233-4209.
